HOKUS — Battery Safety FAQ

At Hokus, we believe that education is the best form of safety. Below are the most common questions we receive regarding our 48V lithium-ion systems and how we ensure your ride is as safe as it is smooth.


  • 1. Are Hokus batteries safe to charge indoors?

    Yes. All Hokus batteries are fully compliant with the 2026 NSW Fair Trading safety regulations for lithium-ion batteries. Our systems feature high-quality cells and an advanced Battery Management System (BMS) that monitors voltage and temperature. However, as with all high-capacity electronics, we recommend charging on a non-flammable surface (like a tile floor or garage) and avoiding charging near exits or on carpets.

  • 2. Can I leave my battery charging overnight?

    While our chargers have an automatic cut-off once the battery reaches 100%, we recommend unplugging your battery once it is fully charged. This is not only a safety best practice but also helps prolong the overall lifespan of the lithium-ion cells by preventing unnecessary "trickle charging."

  • 3. Why do some e-bike batteries catch fire? (The Myths)

    Most e-bike fires reported in the media involve unregulated, non-compliant batteries or "DIY" kits using mismatched chargers.

    • Myth: All e-bikes are fire risks.
    • Fact: Certified, brand-name systems like Hokus are built to strict international safety standards (IEC 62133). Fires almost always occur due to physical damage, the use of cheap third-party chargers, or aftermarket "tuning" that overrides the safety limits of the battery.

  • 4. Is it safe to ride my Hokus in the rain?

    Yes. Hokus batteries are designed to be water-resistant and can handle typical Australian rain and puddles. However, they are not waterproof. You should never submerge the battery or use a high-pressure hose to clean it. If your battery gets exceptionally wet, remove it from the bike and dry the contact points with a clean cloth before charging.

  • 5. Can I use a charger from a different e-bike?

    No. This is one of the most common causes of battery failure. Even if the plug fits, a different charger might have a different voltage or current output that can overwhelm the Hokus BMS. Always use the official Hokus 48V chargersupplied with your bike.

  • 6. How do I know if my battery is "unhealthy" or unsafe?

    As an electrician-led brand, we suggest looking for these four warning signs:

    1. Heat: The battery feels unusually hot during a normal charge.
    2. Odor: You notice a strong "sweet" or chemical smell.
    3. Physical Change: The casing looks slightly swollen or warped.
    4. Performance: The battery suddenly loses 50% of its range or cuts out under load. If you notice any of these, stop using the battery immediately and contact us at hello@hokus.com.au.

7. What makes a "Compliant" battery different?

In NSW, as of February 2026, batteries must be officially "Declared" and tested by accredited labs. A Hokus battery isn't just a box of cells; it’s a tested electrical article with a registered Certificate of Approval. This means it has passed rigorous "crush," "overcharge," and "thermal" testing that generic, unbranded batteries often fail.
